Pigeons, Pitch In and Swimming!

On Tuesday, we read The Pigeon Needs a Bath and worked on drawing a pigeon picture like Mo Willems. The students had to draw their favorite part of the book and tell an adult about it. They drew some fantastic pigeons and added small details to show motion and that the pigeon was dirty. We have discussed how the pigeon is a good and bad character, how he always has a problem, over reacts to his problem and then finds a solution. When the pigeon over reacts, the author shows this by; capital letters in the speech bubble, bigger font, lots of motion lines, changes in the pigeon's face and eyes, he yells and kind of throws a temper tantrum. The students have done a great job listening to all the stories and are beginning to make comparisons between the stories.
On Thursday, we read The Pigeon Finds A Hotdog! This is another great book where the pigeon learns about sharing. This led to a discussion about having a hotdog party and the students came up with a list of things we will need. This hot dog party will take place in May as a celebration to end our author study! The list included; hot dogs, buns, mustard, ketchup, ice cream, balloons, potato chips and a dance! Sounds like a great way to celebrate.

Here are some pictures from our week!
